Narrative Modes Within Perfume the Story of a Murderer
Kyle Schultz Topics in Literature I Professor Murdock 25 April 2012 Narrative Modes Within Perfume: The Story of a Murderer In his novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Patrick Sà ¼skind chooses third person narration to tell the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. And though Grenouille is the character at which the story is based upon, we are also taken through the minds and actions of other characters through the unlimited knowledge of an omniscient narrative voice. By seeing and smelling the world through Grenouille’s eyes and nose while at the same time having it told through several characters instead of him alone, we are somewhat left detached from Grenouille from the very beginning, which only enhances the lack of sympathy and†¦show more content†¦3). Because of the narrative mode of this novel, we are not only able to be told the story of Grenouille’s birth and troubled childhood, but we are also able to read the minds of these characters and their uncanny feelings towards Grenouille, which would not be possible throu gh any other narrative mode or voice. And this is all being done to create a distance between the reader and Grenouille. As the story continues, we begin see and smell the world through Grenouille and somewhat adapt to his unnatural personality. Whatever attachment the reader has with Grenouille at this point is suddenly crippled when he commits his first murder. Although a point of view is given through the victim’s senses as well as Grenouille’s, there is a sudden shock to the discovery his deadly intentions, which up until now no one, not even himself, thought he was capable of: â€Å"he did not look at her, did not see her delicate, freckled face, her red lips, her large sparkling green eyes, keeping his eyes closed tight as he strangled her, for he had only one concernâ€â€not to lose the least trace of her scent†(42, Ch. 8). By painting a vivid picture of a beautiful innocent girl that Grenouille could not see (as he was closing his eyes), the narrator leaves readers with only feelings of disgust towards Grenouille and his selfish, cold-blooded thirst for scent. This situation could only been sufficiently told through the narrative mode used, and now readers begin to lose all sympathy towardsShow MoreRelatedJasper Jones Study Guide6848 Words  | 28 Pages............................................................................ 12 Australian Culture ................................................................................................................................. 14 Language and Narrative Technique ...................................................................................................... 15 Suggested Further Reading .......................................................................................................

A Computerized World Essay Example For Students
A Computerized World Essay Since the first computer was made in the late fifties, the technology hasdeveloped extremely. Computers which took the place of a living-room then, arenow being made in creditcard-formats. More and more areas are being taken overby the computer. As computers are capable of handling large amounts of data in a very shorttime, they are well suited for wordprocessing. I guess that it wont be longtill all the paper-archives are replaced by magnetic tapes and diskettes. Adiskette can contain much more data than a written page, and it takes lessplace It is possible to get the Norwegian telephone book on just one diskette. In near future, a new area will be taken over by computers, namely maps. Different routes are stored on one single compact-disk. Imagine, simply insertthe CD into the CD-driver in your car, and tell the computer where to go. Therest will be done automatically. This will be a safer, faster, and morecomfortable way to travel. Another new area, called virtual reality is currently being tested. This is away to simulate reality on a monitor. In order to feel this so-called realityyou have to wear special electronic glasses and an electronic suit. Fastened tothe suit are sensors, which send information to the main computer. Thiscomputer works with the data and displays them on the electronic spectacles. This is a technique which use three-dimentional views, therefore the sceneryseems incredibly realistic. If you want to be a boxer, simply change thescenery on the main computer, and you are in the ring. Today, many kids have got video games. You could say these games are thepresents answer to ludo and monopoly. In a way, it is a great advantage thatthe kids are being presented to computors at an early age, because they willdefinitely have to use them later, when they start to work. In the future therewill be few occupations which wont use computors, one way or another. But thevideogames are often being presented as something negative, which hinder thekids from doing homework and other more useful activities. This partially true,if they do much of it. But generally, I think the young peoples contact withcomputers is positive. In Norway today, it is getting more common to have a computer at home. You canuse a personal computer to keep household-budgets or other economics. It isalso possible to get in touch with your bank and transwer money while youre inyour sitting-room. It is possible to contact other databases and gather information from them. Theuse of computers has lead to other criminal actions. Hacking is one of them. A hacker steals and manipulates information from other databases. Thesecrimes can be very harmful. In The USA, hackers have managed to break intoNASAs database. The computer-programmes, the software, are extremely high priced, sometimesthey are even more expensive than the hardware. Therefore it is not unusual tomake copies of these programmes. This is strictly illegal, but nobody seems tocare, because it is difficult to control it. Software producers loose BILLIONSof dollars each year because of this. Many methods have been invented to prevent this, but since the hackers oftenare more intelligent than those who make the software, I doubt that there willever be a successfull way to hinder this.
